San Angel Inn at Epcot: A magical Mexican meal beneath the stars

Interior of the San Angel Inn

If you’re looking for one of the most atmospheric dining spots in Epcot, San Angel Inn Restaurante in the Mexico Pavilion might just be the place.

Though this beloved venue is technically indoors, its design – a romantic, twilight-lit courtyard – brings a little bit of Mexican magic to your meal.

Set beneath a ceiling painted to resemble a starry night sky, with views of a glowing Mayan pyramid and a flickering volcano across the water, San Angel Inn wraps diners in the immersive charm that Disney does so well. Add in the gentle lap of boats from the nearby Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros, and you’ve got one of the most stunning interior locations in any Disney park.

But does the food match the ambiance? Read on to find out.

Food and drink: More than meets the eye

Topotos at the San Angel Inn

While the menu is labelled as casual dining, the food quality often exceeds expectations. There’s no dress code – T-shirts and park gear are absolutely fine – but don’t be surprised if your meal rivals a more upmarket restaurant.

To start, we ordered a basket of totopos (tortilla chips) for the table, served with two dips – a vibrant salsa with just a hint of spice, and a smooth, creamy white cheddar queso.

The sopa Azteca at the San Angel restaurant

As a starter, I chose the Sopa Azteca, a rich tortilla soup I’ve returned to time and again. The broth is deep and tomatoey, with crispy tortilla strips, cubes of avocado, cheese, and a touch of chilli nestling at the bottom of the bowl. It’s one of my all-time favourite soups across all of Walt Disney World.

(We did notice that the delicious ceviche they previously offered as a starter is no longer on the menu – one to hope returns in future!)

Main course highlights

For mains, I ordered the Fish Tacos, served with pineapple relish and lime aioli. The zingy, tropical flavours made for a fresh and satisfying plate. My husband opted for the Pollo a las Rajas – a creamy chicken dish with roasted potatoes and strips of bell peppers. It was packed with comforting, warm flavours and very well-balanced.

On our visit, the restaurant staff were also really flexible with children, allowing our son to eat a plain take on the fish tacos (which were, in fact, on the adults’ menu). So if your little eaters are a little fussy, it’s always worth asking.

Don’t skip the drinks menu either – it’s extensive and well thought out. My husband enjoyed a classic lime margarita with orange liqueur, which was expertly mixed and very refreshing and now has him pining for margaritas, even in rainy England! The selection includes both traditional and inventive margaritas, Mexican beers, and specialty cocktails that complement the menu beautifully.

Pricing and reservations

San Angel Inn falls into the moderate price range for Disney dining – expect entrées in the $20–$35 range for adults. Given the immersive setting and food quality, we found the pricing to be fair – especially considering you’re sitting beside a volcano in Epcot. It’s also on the full Disney Dining Plan, requiring one table-service credit, so great value if that applies to you.

It’s less expensive than signature dining options like California Grill or Topolino’s Terrace, and more refined than many quick-service locations.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended – this is a popular location, and walk-ups can be difficult. Confusingly, there are three Disney dining venues with similar names – as well as the San Angel Inn, there’s La Hacienda de San Angel and La Cantina de San Angel, so make sure you book the right one!

Our insider tips for dining

Service on this visit was friendly and welcoming – more relaxed than in the past when it’s sometimes felt a little formal. One important tip: make sure your entire party arrives on time. On a previous trip here, even though part of our group was only slightly delayed (caught by a long queue), the restaurant nearly gave our table away. When you’re dining inside a theme park, timing can be tricky, so allow extra wiggle room around your reservation.

And if you time your meal well, you’ll step out of the pavilion just in time to catch the Epcot fireworks show over World Showcase Lagoon – a magical end to a lovely meal.
