Is Walt Disney World worth it for UK families?

Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom

For most UK families, Walt Disney World Resort is absolutely worth it – especially if you have the time and budget for a longer trip.

The scale, variety and immersive experience make the trip feel like a full holiday, rather than just a theme park visit. However, for shorter, more affordable breaks, Disneyland Paris may be the better choice.

Choosing between Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World

Disneyland Paris Castle

A trip to Walt Disney World is often described as a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, especially for families travelling from the UK.

But with long flights and significant costs involved, many parents wonder whether it’s really worth it – or whether a closer option like Disneyland Paris might be the better choice.

If you want a short, convenient, and more affordable taste of Disney, Disneyland Paris is a fantastic option. But if you’re looking for a full-scale holiday with unmatched scale, variety, and immersion, Walt Disney World offers something truly special.

Travel time from the UK

One of the biggest differences is simply how far you have to travel.

  • Disney World: Around 9-10 hours for the flight alone from the UK (although it’s often about an hour quicker on the way back, thanks to the jet stream).
  • Disneyland Paris: A trip to France sounds fairly quick and simple compared with a trip to Florida – but that’s not always the case. While getting to Disneyland Paris can take around 4–5 hours door-to-door if travelling by train or car from London, journeys can be significantly longer from other parts of the UK. We live in the Midlands and the drive takes around eight hours, excluding stops). Flying can be convenient, especially with a direct high-speed TGV train from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy, but it’s worth factoring in transfers, security, and traffic.

As Heather from UK Disney Magic recently found, a seemingly short flight can quickly add up:

“We actually took ages travelling to Disneyland Paris from the Midlands… by the time we’d driven to the airport, waited for the flight, cleared security in Paris and sat in traffic, it took around six hours 45 door-to-door. At one point, I remember thinking we could nearly have been in Orlando.”

Cost comparison

If we’re being honest, cost is often the deciding factor for UK families. While no Disney holiday is cheap, a typical Disney World holiday in Florida usually involves:

  • Transatlantic flights
  • Two weeks of accommodation
  • Park tickets
  • Dining and spending money

A family holiday to Disney World can easily cost £8,000-£12,000 or more depending on the hotel and season. We’ve analysed pricing during the four major holiday periods in is now the best time to book a Disney World holiday?

By comparison, a short Disneyland Paris break can be significantly cheaper. In fact, I managed to get two days of park tickets, travel and a week of off-site accommodation for my whole family (two adult, one child) for £1,000 this October. Stay tuned to our blog and I’ll reveal how.

While staying on-site at a Disneyland Paris resort and dining at the parks will increase your costs, your break is likely to be a fraction of the price of a Florida trip. We’ve got a full breakdown of the figures in our guide when is the best time to go to Disneyland Paris?

Size of the parks

World Showcase Lagoon Epcot

Another major difference is scale. Stepping into Walt Disney World is like immersing yourself in a world of magic. There are multiple, beautifully themed resorts, as well as four theme parks:

  • Magic Kingdom – the home of classic rides and the famous castle.
  • Epcot – you’ll find futuristic rides and the World Showcase, a charming recreation of countries from around the world
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – movie-themed attractions such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom – inspired by Africa and Asia, you can go on safari and ride Expedition Everest

You’ll also find two water parks and a huge shopping, dining and entertainment district called Disney Springs. For more on this area, check out our guide is it worth going to Disney Springs?

By contrast, Disneyland Paris has two parks:

  • Disneyland Park – similar to the Magic Kingdom, albeit with slight variations on rides
  • Disney Adventure World – a reimagined version of the former Walt Disney Studios Park, officially launching this month with new themed areas, a central lake, and a Frozen-inspired land, with further expansions to come.

Even with this expansion, the scale is still very different. Many visitors from the UK spend 2-3 days at Disneyland Paris (potentially stretching to 3-4 days as new areas open), while a trip to Walt Disney World Resort typically requires at least a week to experience properly – and even then, you may wish you had more time. We certainly do!

Atmosphere and immersion

Sunrise at Coronado Springs

Disney World is designed as a complete holiday resort. While on previous trips to Orlando, we have visited other parks, attractions such as the Kennedy Space Centre and explored shopping and dining beyond Disney, during recent holidays we haven’t left the Disney site at all.

On the face of it, this might sound claustrophobic, but there is so much to do and see that you never get bored. You can use Disney’s free transportation service to get around, dispensing with the need to hire a car, and dine in Disney restaurants – or order supermarket deliveries to your room to keep your budget down.

By contrast, Disneyland Paris can feel more like a short break, especially if you stay in a nearby hotel or visit for just a few days.

Staying at a Disney hotel, whether in Florida or Paris, is a unique experience and, if your budget stretches to it, one that we would always recommend.

But staying off-site in Paris can give you a different kind of holiday – such as easy access to Paris itself and all its myriad attractions.

For families looking for a full “Disney bubble” experience, Disney World in Florida tends to feel more immersive.

When Disneyland Paris might be the better choice

Disneyland-Paris

If you have never been to a Disney park before and aren’t sure what to expect, Disneyland Paris can be an ideal starting point for UK visitors. It’s a great “first Disney experience”, giving families a taste of what makes the parks special before committing to a larger Florida trip.

Disneyland Paris is also a great choice if:

  • You want a shorter Disney trip
  • You have younger children
  • You’re looking for a more affordable option
  • You don’t want to travel long-haul
  • You’re looking for a simpler, less planning-heavy holiday (there’s no doubt that planning a Walt Disney World holiday has become pretty logistics-heavy in recent years)

When Walt Disney World is worth it

Star Wars Rise of the Resistance

For many UK families, Disney World is a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip… or so they think. It’s amazing how easily it becomes “twice”, “thrice” or more once you’ve been!

With that in mind, here are the things that – in our view – could make a Walt Disney World holiday perfect for you:

  • You want the full Disney experience. Disney is very different from most theme parks, with rides and experiences that feel truly magical. Staying on site for two weeks puts you right in the heart of this special place.
  • You plan to visit for 10-14 days. If you have the time for a longer holiday, Disney World is the kind of destination that can give you plenty to do.
  • You want access to multiple parks and attractions. Thanks to its sheer scale, Walt Disney World offers a huge range of rides and attractions you won’t find in Disneyland Paris.
  • You’re combining Disney with other Florida attractions. Universal Studios (home to Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay) is located just a few miles from Disney. You’ll also find other theme parks, such as SeaWorld, as well as stylish malls, discount shopping outlets, dining, sports and – beyond Orlando – a stunning coastline and memorable attractions like the Kennedy Space Center. There is a lot!
  • You just want a bit of sun! Much as we love Paris, the weather can be variable, similar to the UK. In Florida, the sunshine is far more reliable – though it’s still worth checking seasonal patterns, as storms and even hurricanes can occasionally disrupt travel plans.

Visitors often say the sheer scale, theming, and variety make Walt Disney World feel like a completely different level of Disney holiday. This’s why so many British families feel Walt Disney World Resort is worth the extra time and cost.

Final verdict: Is Disney World worth it?

Naturally we’re biased – but we’d say a unanimous yes.

While the price of a fortnight’s stay, not to mention the complex planning, can feel off-putting at first, something changes once you arrive. Your shoulders drop, your steps lighten and it’s almost impossible not to be caught up in the magic.

We’ve been travelling to Disney World for more than four decades and those holidays form a key part of our family history.

Taking that time to switch off, be together and enjoy the escapism of the parks is truly special and something we have returned to again and again – and now share with our own children.

That said, if you’re not sure Disney is right for you, then Disneyland Paris is fantastic for quick breaks and first visits. It has its own special feel and makes for a very distinctive Disney holiday in its own right, with beautifully designed parks and hotels the added benefit of being so close to Paris and its many attractions.

In fact, many UK families start with Disneyland Paris – and end up planning a trip to Florida once they catch the Disney bug.

But for those willing to invest the time and budget, Walt Disney World offers a bigger, more immersive experience that many families consider unforgettable.
